It’s just a piece of plastic. Just a piece of plastic. Just a piece of plastic with a chip in it, and all it has to do is light up, and she can flip it open, and her voice can be heard, and she can say the things she really needs to say with all her damages piling up inside and the voice of her therapist telling her she’s manipulative and controlling, and all it has to do is light up for her voice to be heard by someone on the other end, someone with their own piece of plastic, but it’s just a piece of a plastic. Just a piece of plastic. That’s what she tells herself to keep from thinking it’s a phone and it’s supposed to ring and keep her connected to all the people she values and loves. It’s just a piece of plastic and nothing more. If it were something more, it would have to serve some purpose to her, have to mean something to her, and then she’d feel resentful. Resentful of a piece of plastic. There’s your ass-backwards thinking, Doctor. If it were more than a piece of plastic, it would have to ring, and there would be something that goes like this: “Hi, Megan. We miss you and love you. What’s going on in the FBI world?”

But it’s just a piece of plastic. Just a piece of plastic. Nothing more.

Besides, when it rings, it only rings with death. When it rings, it’s Don to say there’s somebody else dead, or somebody else in trouble, or somebody else that needs them and not in a mutual, loving, healthy way – it’s in a desperate, victimized, call-to-911 way.

So it’s just a piece of plastic. Just a piece of plastic.

Solitary.

Sedentary.

Silent.
