If you're like me and fell in love with UnderOath's album They're Only Chasing Safety, you've come to expect a great compilation of screaming choruses and beautiful melodies. Their follow-up album Define the Great Line was recommended to me, and I was excited to go get it. Unfortunately, I was disappointed when I listened to it. The musicianship is strong, and the boys have their talent together, but the melodic quality I had come to expect from Safety is missing. There was something bordering on radio-friendly that existed in the songs on their previous album. Define lacks it. And perhaps radio-friendly isn't UnderOath's ultimate goal. If the goal is to create edgy, Christian, screamo music, then they've accomplished it. The music of Define seems, contrary to title, undefined and meandering without structure.
I'm not necessarily a stickler for verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus format, but I do feel that often when aggressive music lacks pointed highs and lows, it comes off as improvisational noise.
I'll continue to enjoy my copy of They're Only Chasing Safety, but Define the Great Line just isn't doing it for me. We'll see what UnderOath brings us with their next offering.
